Open Words for Open Minds

Miruna Georgescu

My name is Miruna and I am a qualified conference interpreter and translator. I am currently working as a contract agent translator at the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, after having completed a traineeship there. I am bilingual in Italian and Romanian, I have a retour in English, and Spanish as a C language. My bilingual, multicultural upbringing is one of the main reasons why I decided to study foreign languages and explore new cultures.

I completed a BA in Intercultural and Linguistic Mediation in Italy, at the University of Bologna (Forlì), and subsequently moved to the UK, where I worked as a public service interpreter and translator in Birmingham and the West Midlands for around a year. I then started an MA in Conference Interpreting and Translation Studies at the University of Leeds. This is where I met Eleanor and Lara. During my MA, I volunteered as a Project Coordinator for Translators without Borders. After I graduated from my MA, I started freelancing as a conference/business interpreter and translator. I have experience translating and interpreting in the food and wine sector, the cultural one and in medical settings.

My passions include gender studies, MMA (mixed martial arts), volunteering, exploring the sociological and historical role of translation, and listening to Americana bands, counting Modest Mouse and the Gaslight Anthem among my favorites.
